Artesyn Embedded Technologies announces Centellis OCP Platform – the high performance integrated computing system inspired by Open Compute Project (OCP) standards. This computing solution aims to deliver lower CAPEX and OPEX to the communication service providers (CSPs) through open source hardware and software leveraging the virtualization technology.

The Centellis OCP Platform provides CSPs with a common application deployment software platform. This platform is independent of the hardware architecture and it supports the scaling of end-to-end virtual network functions (VNFs) i.e. from the edge to the core of carrier networks.

“Artesyn is collaborating with customers and contributing to industry bodies such as the Open Compute Project (OCP) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to apply our many years of experience in building solutions for the telecom infrastructure to the emerging demand for OCP technologies in carrier networks. The new Artesyn Centellis OCP Platform offers a path to a class of OCP solutions that are optimized to network equipment requirements,” said Doug Sandy, CTO, Artesyn Embedded Technologies.

While being compatible with the Centellis Virtualization platform, the Centellis OCP platform provides benefits which include: enabling use of off-the-shelf VNFs for network functions virtualization implementations; using of cost effective open hardware for communication infrastructure voiding the need for multiple application-specific hardware platforms; efficient rack-based power; compliant with FCC and UL regulations; easy maintenance; leverages Broadcom Trident II-based switching.

The Centellis Virtualization Platform is the company’s application virtualization framework designed to support OpenFlow and OpenStack with the aim to boost adoption of software-defined networking (SDN) and NFV across the organizations. CSPs can leverage this platform to run virtualized applications such as firewall, DPI, security, or session border controller on a single hardware platform. Its dynamic applications/VNF scaling with varying network traffic checks the over-provisioning requirements.

The concept of virtualization in the network and equipment architecture may have originally took its birth for the data center and cloud industry, but this new technology is increasingly gaining widespread attention among the CSPs. Virtualization delivers operational flexibility, scalable architecture, end-to-end network transparency, programmability, easy management, and cost benefits and CSPs are making a point to not to be left out of the party.
