Red Hat unveils its vision for integrating its technology with Linux containers from Docker. With an objective to deliver powerful developer capabilities and a lightweight application packaging approach for enterprise workloads across industries, the open source technology solutions company moors its relationship with Docker by bringing in four new factors:

Red Hat Connect for Technology Partners; Red Hat Container Development Kit (CDK); Red Hat Container Certification; Red Hat Container Registry.

Red Hat has shown great confidence in what Docker set out to deliver. And as such it has been working with Docker to realize a secured environment so that they can be used in enterprise environments. It wants to achieve this by mutual support and certification for customers using the Docker technology and containers. Besides, it is also contributing to bring about industry standards for container technologies.

First in the Red Hat’s strategy for Docker is the ‘Red Hat Connect for Technology Partners.’ The company says it is “a new overarching partner program designed to accelerate a vibrant ecosystem of technology companies whose solutions run on or integrate with Red Hat products, starting with containers.” With an eye on building container-based applications, independent software vendors (ISVs) as partners can engage and collaborate with Red Hat and other interested partners.

Partners in this program have access to CDK – a collection of tools and resources for developers to build and maintain containerized applications based on Docker for the Red Hat ecosystem. Besides, they will also have access to documentation, knowledge-bases and forums, as well as certification tools and services that support the container’s lifecycle.

Red Hat has been driven by the idea that a container has to be certified to ensure malicious code doesn’t ruin production environment and eventuate in hurting business interests. To this end, CDK tools can be leveraged to verify the source of the content held in the containers and to make sure that the content is free from vulnerabilities. Termed as Red Hat Container Certification, this program ensures that only certified, trusted Linux containers make it to the enterprise production environment. The program is along the lines of the existing Red Hat certification program for applications running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Through this initiative, Red Hat delivers greater trust levels, security and lifecycle management to the enterprise community cutting across the business verticals.

The certified application containers will be channeled in the form of federated, standardized container registries. Red Hat takes the first step by releasing its own supported registry termed as ‘Red Hat Container Registry’ – and with future plans to enable partners and ISVs to host their own registries for Red Hat certified containers. This certified registry pool of containers can be sourced by enterprises thus paving for secured container access.
